Basic Obedience Dog Commands Every Dog Should Know (Practical Obedience Training Guide)

Teach essential dog commands like sit, stay, and come with simple steps, timing tips, and troubleshooting for real-life reliability.

Basic obedience commands keep your dog safe and make life together more enjoyable. Here are the essential commands every dog should learn.

Sit

The foundation command. Hold a treat above your dog's nose and move it back over their head. As they look up, their bottom naturally goes down. Mark and reward.

Stay

Start with your dog in a sit. Say "stay," take one step back, then return and reward. Gradually increase distance and duration over many sessions.

Come

The most important safety command. Start in a low-distraction environment. Use an excited voice and reward generously when your dog comes to you.

Down

From a sit, lure your dog's nose to the ground with a treat, then pull it toward you. Their body will follow into a down position.

Leave It

Essential for safety. Place a treat under your foot. When your dog stops trying to get it and looks at you, reward with a different treat.

Keep training sessions short (5-10 minutes) and positive. Consistency and patience lead to a well-mannered companion.
