How Much Exercise Does Your Dog Need? A Practical Guide to Dog Exercise Needs

Learn how much dog exercise your pup really needs by age, breed, and health—plus -friendly tips for walking your dog safely year-round.

The right amount of exercise keeps your dog healthy, happy, and well-behaved. Here's how to figure out what your dog needs.

By Breed Type

High energy (Border Collies, Labs) - 1-2 hours of vigorous exercise daily.

Moderate energy (Beagles, Bulldogs) - 30-60 minutes of activity daily.

Low energy (Basset Hounds, Pugs) - 20-30 minutes of gentle exercise daily.

Age Considerations

Puppies need short, frequent play sessions - about 5 minutes per month of age, twice daily. Seniors may need shorter, gentler walks with more rest breaks.

Signs of Enough Exercise

A well-exercised dog is calm at home, sleeps well, and doesn't engage in destructive behaviors. If your dog is restless or destructive, they likely need more activity.

Mix It Up

Combine walks with fetch, swimming, or puzzle toys. Mental stimulation is just as tiring as physical exercise for most dogs.

Adjust based on weather, your dog's health, and their individual needs. Some dogs within the same breed need very different amounts of exercise.
